On Friday, 30th August, 2024, Mr. Umar Zafar Shiekh, addressed the participants of 41st MCMC on “Accountability and Performance”.

The guest speaker explained that performance is only guaranteed when there are laws and rules being followed but the lack of accountability hits upon this very foundation. The result of this non implementation of laws is that an organization loses credibility and ownership.

He discussed that the rampant corruption in our society today is due to acceptance and tolerance for corruption, inversely proportional relationship of low risk and high gain, unlimited discretionary powers and low salaries. He suggested the solution for curbing corruption, stating that the three types of accountabilities i.e. self, internal and external need to be implemented in true letter and spirit. Self-accountability is nurtured by our religion, internal accountability through laws and regulations while external is carried out by institutions like NAB. FIA and other anti- corruption agencies. All the three accountabilities practiced together can become a meaningful tool for good performance. To build an honest nation, accountability, transparency and the fight against corruption have to be taught as fundamental values.
