On March 26, 2025, Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora, Minister for Minorities Affairs, Punjab, delivered an impactful lecture to the participants of 37th SMC on “Issues and Welfare of Marginalized Communities in Pakistan”.
Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora gave an overview of marginalized communities in Pakistan, specifically Punjab, and the efforts that the Punjab government was making in improving the quality of life of such communities. He talked about the challenges related to mainstreaming of marginalized communities and how these could be overcome thorough economic empowerment, and social acceptability.
Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora highlighted important legislation such as the ‘Sikh Marriage Registration Act passed in 2018 by Punjab assembly to facilitate the Sikh community. He also discussed issues such as forced marriages and gender harassment faced by adversely affected members of minorities and how these could be dealt with by stricter rules regarding marriages and gender sensitization of the masses. Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora concluded the session by emphasizing that as a nation we must all work together for an inclusive society with a culture of mutual respect.
