On Wednesday, 16th July, 2025, Mr. Naeem Aslam, Former Dean, National Management College (NMC), delivered a talk on “Communication Skills” to the participants of the 38th SMC.

Mr. Naeem Aslam started his lecture by explaining how to overcome barriers in communication. He suggested to use direct simple language and avoid the use of complex language to impress others. He guided the participants about reinforcing words with actions for example, say what you mean and mean what you say. He highlighted the importance of communicating honestly. Further, he explained that the biggest communication problem is we do not listen to understand, we listen to reply. He defined communication as the act of transferring information from one place, person, or group to another.

He also discussed nonverbal communication involving body language, gestures, postures, facial expressions and eye contact. He further pointed out factors of influence or communication barriers which include hearing what we expect to hear, influence of reference group, language, jargon, stress, emotions noise and distance. Worthy speaker also discussed various tips to overcome these barriers including active listening, using direct simple language, reinforcing words with actions and feedback. He emphasized to always communicate honestly. Speaker also discussed cross-cultural communication where he discussed how to avoid assumptions and stereotypes, getting awareness of cultural differences and showing respect and curiosity.

Speaker also discussed digital communication including emails, messaging apps and video calls which are essential and required professionalism and clarity to overcome communication barriers. Speaker concluded as “word spoken is an opportunity to lead, influence and inspire others to action”.
