On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, Mr. Ahmad Rafay Alam, Environmental Expert delivered a lecture to the participants of 38th SMC on “Environmental Management”. He talked about protecting the ecology, conserving resources, and promoting sustainable development. During the lecture he also covered the adverse effects of pollution and climate change and how to manage these.
Mr. Ahmad Rafay Alam gave an overview of environmental laws, both federal and provincial, with special focus on Punjab environmental quality standards for drinking water, noise, industrial gaseous emissions and others. He examined how enforcement of environment protection laws is lacking, and government initiatives aimed at curbing environmental degradation are not followed up with.
Mr. Ahmad Rafay Alam went into great detail discussing the implications of water and air pollution as well as climate change for Pakistan. He gave the example of smog in Lahore and how it cannot be done away with in a few months but in fact it would take years of controlling car emissions, industrial waste, planting green belts and undertaking other measures to improve air quality. He concluded his session by inculcating a sense of urgency among the participants with regards to environmental management and protection so as to safeguard the future of living beings on this earth.
