On September 3rd, 2025. Mr. Zameer Abbas, Secretary Tourism and Culture, Gilgit-Baltistan. delivered a most pertinent and engaging lecture to the participants of 38th SMC on “Peculiarities of Politico-Administrative Arrangements & Governance in Gilgit Baltistan”. He discussed the history of Gilgit-Baltistan, its culture and environment, and its political and administrative setup

Mr. Zameer Abbas spoke of the peculiar challenge faced by Gilgit-Baltistan with regards to its Constitutional status that even though it is not a province it is administered as a province. GB is multi ethnic, with various religious sects and in the past there have been difficulties in dealing with the clashes that erupted between different sects but these were resolved with dialogue. Gilgit-Baltistan also faces the challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, and ecological disturbances.

Mr. Zameer Abbas extrapolated that the natural beauty, high peaks and unique landscapes of Gilgit-Baltistan are attractive for tourists, both foreign and domestic. If the administration of Gilgit-Baltistan is able to explore the potential of tourism and simultaneously deal with climate change it may be a huge boost for the region.
