A lecture discussion on “Artificial Intelligence: Conceptual Understanding, Potential and Applications” was delivered on August 22, 2025 by Prof. Dr. Syed Waqar ul Qounain Jaffry, Chairman, Department of Information Technology and Director, National Centre of Artificial Intelligence, University of the Punjab, for participants of the 44th Mid-Career Management Course at NIPA Lahore. Dr. Jaffry highlighted the role of ICT in governance, emphasizing how reliable data enables evidence-based decision making and transparent service delivery. He provided a clear overview of Al, differentiating it from traditional systems and explaining its applications in governance, including biometric verification by NADRA, healthcare claim monitoring under Sehat Sahulat, and Al powered surveillance by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority. The session also introduced machine learning and generative Al underscoring their potential to enhance efficiency and cost effectiveness. Ethical concerns such as data bias, privacy, and accountability were discussed along with the significance of Pakistan’s newly approved National Al Policy 2025.
