Monday 10th February, 2025, Dr. Basit Shafiq, Chair and Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science, Lahore University of Management Sciences, delivered a talk on “Blockchain Technology” to the participants of the 37th SMC.
- Dr. Basit Shafiq delivered an insightful lecture on Blockchain Technology, beginning with an overview of its fundamental concepts, structure, and types, including public, private, and consortium blockchains. He explained how blockchain operates as a decentralized, secure, and immutable ledger, making it a revolutionary technology with applications beyond cryptocurrencies. The discussion covered key blockchain applications across various sectors, such as finance, supply chain management, healthcare, governance, and cybersecurity. Dr. Shafiq emphasized how blockchain enhances transparency, security, and efficiency by eliminating intermediaries and ensuring tamper-proof transactions.
- The lecture also explored the regulatory landscape for blockchain technology. addressing the legal and policy considerations essential for its widespread adoption. Dr. Shafiq discussed the need for a skilled workforce in blockchain development, smart contracts, and decentralized application (DApp) programming. He highlighted blockchain adoption challenges and opportunities in the public sector, including issues of scalability. interoperability, regulatory uncertainty, and integration with legacy systems. However, he also pointed out opportunities for enhancing e-governance, financial inclusion, and digital identity verification. The session concluded with recommendations on how Pakistan can strategically adopt blockchain to improve governance, streamline public services, and foster economic innovation.
