On February 13, 2025, the National Institute of Public Administration, Lahore, hosted Mr. Rafiq Jaffar, for a lecture on “Critical thinking”.
He provided an overview of critical thinking’s core principles, benefits, and key standards and highlighted the use of mind mapping to engage both the logical and creative aspects of the brain, contrasting traditional memorization-based education with more progressive models, such as Finland’s. He defined critical thinking as the process of analyzing facts, evidence, and arguments to reach informed conclusions. Eight standards of critical thinking were outlined: clarity, accuracy, precision, relevance, depth, breadth, logic, and fairness. Common barriers to critical thinking, including biases, emotions, and selective memory, were discussed, with an emphasis on recognizing and addressing these obstacles. The lecture also emphasized key qualities of critical thinkers, such as open-mindedness, self-awareness, initiative, and independent thought, to enhance effective decision-making and problem-solving.
