A Keynote Address on “Development of Space Technology in Pakistan” was delivered by Professor Dr. Syed Amir Mehmood, Director, Institute of Space Sciences, University of the Punjab, at the National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA), Lahore for participants of 45th MCMC. The speaker presented a comprehensive overview of Pakistan’s space journey, tracing its origins from the establishment of SUPARCO to contemporary advancements. He highlighted the strategic importance of space technology for national security, governance, and socio-economic development.

Dr. Mehmood elaborated on Pakistan’s satellite milestones, including PakSat and remote sensing satellites, and explained the role of space technology in communication, surveillance, agriculture, disaster management, and modern warfare. He emphasized that space programs require sustained investment and international collaboration, noting Pakistan’s cooperation with China as a strategic necessity. The lecture also shed light on emerging technologies such as radar-based remote sensing, electronic warfare, and satellite-enabled air defense systems.

The speaker discussed future prospects, including upcoming satellite missions, academic collaboration, and Pakistan’s participation in human spaceflight. He underscored the growing relevance of the global space economy and Pakistan’s need to strengthen its institutional and technological capacity. The keynote address was followed by a regulated question-and-answer session, allowing participants to engage on comparative space capabilities, data sharing, and long-term strategic planning.
