A workshop on “Geographic Information System (GIS) as a Decision-Making Tool” was conducted in National Institute of Public Administration Lahore on Thursday, 27th November, 2025 for the participants of 45th MCMC by Dr. Urooj Saeed, a Senior GIS Specialist at the Urban Unit.

Dr. Saeed introduced the basic concepts of Geographic Information System and types of GIS data to build the understanding of the participants. She highlighted the importance of GIS in public policy planning with respect to data collection and decision making. She also highlighted the role that GIS is currently performing in different government departments for decision making. She shed light on the use of GIS tools and techniques in parcel level information, population demography, protected area management, health & education sectors’ management, land acquisition & land record management, industrial planning, development planning, encroachments identification, disbursement of flood relief funds, floods management, agricultural and environmental sectors. Dr. Saeed then introduced “Punjab Socio-Economic Registry”, the flagship project of Punjab Government, and discussed the importance of this initiative in shaping public governance and service delivery in Punjab.

The speaker emphasized that the modern tools like GIS must be integrated in our decision making for improving efficiency and effectiveness of public service delivery. The session concluded with a standing ovation to the esteemed speaker by the faculty and participants.
