On April 9th, 2026, a workshop titled “Geographic Information System (GIS) as a Decision-Making Tool” for the 46th MCMC was conducted by Dr. Urooj Saeed (Senior GIS Specialist, Urban Unit) as guest speaker at NIPA Lahore. The session introduced core GIS concepts and data types and demonstrated how spatial analysis informs policy planning, data collection, and evidence-based decision making. Dr. Saeed briefly explained the data repository of Urban Unit and how that data can be accessed and utilized for policy formulation and analysis. She also highlighted practical applications across government domains, including parcel level mapping, demographic profiling, protected area management, health and education system oversight, land records and acquisition, industrial and development planning, encroachment identification, disaster and flood management, targeted relief disbursement, and broader agricultural and environmental governance. The workshop emphasized institutional integration of GIS to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of public service delivery.
