On Thursday, August 21, 2025. Dr. Ali Sajid delivered a workshop on “Performance Management in Public Sector” for the participants of 44th Mid-Career Management Course at National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA) Lahore. Dr. Ali Sajid is a highly accomplished academic and trainer who has been, among other, Chair, NUST Business School, Islamabad. The workshop was divided into two parts. In the first part, the Guest Speaker presented his thoughts on the topic, whereas the second part was devoted for hands on activities.

Dr. Sajid began the workshop by explaining the concept of ‘performance’ and ‘performance in public sector’. Performance in public sector, he said, consisted of protecting government resources, applying regulations, behaving as per due process and producing outstanding results. After that he explained various types of performance indicators. Dr. Sajid then discussed performance management, emphasizing that it was different from performance appraisal. Then he explained the two phenomena. Next, Dr. Sajid discussed characteristics of personnel appraisal. He also explained the factors which could cause unsatisfactory performance and also how could these be improved. After discussing these ideas, Dr. Sajid talked about Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), which he described as the most critical aspects of organizational performance. KPIs should be, he emphasized, specific, attainable, measurable, realistic, and doable. He also explained various types of KPI.

After Dr. Sajid finished his talk, he divided the class into four groups. Each group was asked to formulate KPIs according to the given instruction. Each group worked on the assignment and prepared a power point presentation, which it presented before the entire class towards the end of the workshop. Dr. Sajid highly appreciated the work done by syndicates.
