On May 9th, 2025, Dr. Muhammad Naveed Iftikhar, delivered a thought-provoking lecture to the participants of 37th SMC on “Sustainable Urban Development and Eco Cities”. He shared that 21st century is known as urbanization century due to the fact that world over there has been rapid urbanization and exponential growth of cities.

Dr. Muhammad Naveed Iftikhar discussed in detail how urban development is not just about skyscrapers, signal free roads and underpasses, it is in fact about making cities livable for its inhabitants by ensuring housing and mobility for all, not just for the rich bungalow residents and car owners. He also explained that women and the youth may be catered to by providing affordable public transport and by maintenance of public spaces.

Dr. Muhammad Naveed Iftikhar suggested that cities pursue city management and urban policy to create jobs and improve municipal services rather than making master plans. He also advised that to protect against negative effects of climate change and pollution, city/local governments focus on reducing emissions, recycling and waste management.

Dr. Muhammad Naveed Iftikhar concluded the discussion by elaborating that if cities are to be successful, they may also learn the art of collaborative governance.
