On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, Dr. Khalid Waleed, Research Fellow and Head Energy and Sustainable Future Resources at SDPI addressed the participants of 36^th SMC on “The Dynamics of Energy Sector in Pakistan”. Dr. Khalid Waleed delivered an enlightening talk on the energy sector in Pakistan, providing a detailed overview of the current landscape and its challenges. He began by discussing the structure of the energy sector, focusing on the country’s dependence on thermal power, hydropower, and growing renewable energy sources. He highlighted Pakistan’s energy crisis, driven by a widening gap between demand and supply.

Dr. Waleed delved into the dynamics of power generation, distribution, and pricing. particularly in the context of Independent Power Producers (IPPs). He explained the complexities of the IPP agreements, their role in energy production, and the impact of rising capacity payments on electricity pricing. He emphasized the need for more competitive pricing strategies to reduce the financial burden on consumers.

The talk also explored the role of regulators such as NEPRA and OGRA in overseeing the energy market and maintaining standards, along with the contribution of provincial governments in managing resources and policy implementation.

Dr. Waleed stressed upon the importance of energy efficiency and conservation measures to reduce wastage. He also advocated for the expansion of alternative energy sources, such as solar and wind power, to create a more sustainable and resilient energy future for Pakistan.
